About Carnaval Tenosique ( Danza del Pochó )

The strangest carnival in the world, where attendees are covered in flour, egg and water. The dance is carried out in order to purify the spirits by killing "El Pocho" (evil god). This dance of Mayan origin consists of three main characters, who represent the fight between good and evil: Las Pochoveras, priestesses of the God Pochó, responsible for keeping the fire burning around his altar; The Cojoes are the men created from corn and are at the service of the Pochó; The Tigers: come to earth to kill El Pochó. It is accompanied by troupes, dances, contests, floats and other activities.

Everything begins in the captain's house with the sound of the caja (drum) and the whistle (reed whistle) with which the persecution of the Malingo God Pochó begins through the streets until reaching the Central Park culminating with the "Dance of the Poached".

The Carnival festivities end with the house and death of the Pochó on Shrove Tuesday.
