One of the oldest squares in the city, has witnessed important historical events as in 1858 when Benito Juárez occupied it by declaring Guanajuato as the capital of the country. In 1897 the Monument to Peace was built, the work of Jesús Contreras and inaugurated by Don Porfirio Díaz.
