The peak of the site was during the Late Preclassic period and it is believed that during this time it was one of the most important cities in northern Yucatan.
The most important characteristic of Aké is its system of roads, which allow communication with other sites in the region, in addition to having a high urban level. The city had circular walls, the center was intended for ceremonial activity while outside the walls was the residential area. The architecture revolved around the De Las Pilastras structure, which is thought to have one of the highest ceilings of its time.
