About Ex Convent of San Agustin

The Xilitla convent, built in the 16th century, is the only existing Plateresque-style convent and the oldest in the state. Constructed of solid masonry, with thick, high walls crowned by crenellations of Moorish influence.

It was once used as a school, barracks, and even a canteen. Its main facade was recently remodeled, now featuring special lighting on the facade, rooftops, main nave, and cloister.

Sundays are Huapangueada day in the main square, a traditional dance with music, the tianguis is also set up where the famous zacahuiles (tamales up to two meters long to share) are prepared.
